The Platinum #3776 Century Kaga Hira Maki-e Sakura combines the writing qualities of Platinum's iconic #3776 Century with one of Japan's most distinctive decorative traditions.
Against the deep black body, delicate sakura – Japanese cherry blossoms – extend across the barrel and cap. The decoration is created using Hira Maki-e, a traditional technique in which genuine urushi lacquer and metallic powders are used to build the design on the surface of the pen. Platinum identifies this model specifically as Kaga Hira Maki-e, linking the decoration to the long tradition of Japanese lacquer craftsmanship.
Cherry blossom – sakura – is one of the most recognisable motifs in Japanese decorative arts. Here, the flowers provide a delicate contrast to the black body, while the gold details of the pen echo the metallic elements of the Maki-e decoration.
Underneath the decoration is a full #3776 Century fountain pen. The model is fitted with Platinum's large 14K gold nib and the brand's Slip & Seal mechanism, designed to maintain an airtight seal inside the cap and help prevent the ink from drying when the pen is not used for a period of time.
This version comes with Platinum's Medium (M) 14K gold nib. It offers a broader line than the characteristic Japanese Fine nib and is particularly well suited to everyday writing, correspondence and journaling when you want the colour and shading of an ink to be more visible.
As with Japanese nibs generally, the Medium remains relatively precise, making it a good balance between controlled everyday writing and a more generous ink flow.
The black body keeps the Sakura decoration understated, while the Maki-e work rewards a closer look. It is a beautiful introduction to traditional Japanese lacquer decoration without sacrificing the practicality of an everyday fountain pen.
