MUSUBI × COCHAE – Furoshiki 100 cm – Japanese Folk Toys Black

A large Japanese cotton furoshiki featuring 31 traditional folk toys from across Japan, selected and illustrated by COCHAE for MUSUBI.

Known as kyōdo-gangu, these regional folk toys have been made for generations using local materials and drawing inspiration from the customs, legends and beliefs of their place of origin. More than simple children’s toys, many were traditionally created as good-luck charms, protective objects or symbols of good health.

COCHAE has brought together 31 different examples, ranging from toys that are no longer produced to familiar objects such as kokeshi dolls, whose craft traditions continue today. The black background and graphic white illustrations turn this collection of small regional objects into a striking contemporary pattern.

COCHAE is a Japanese design unit founded in 2003 and known for its idea of “playful design”. Their work explores origami, toys, packaging and traditional Japanese culture, often giving familiar objects and customs a fresh and interactive character.

How to use

At 100 × 100 cm, this is a particularly versatile furoshiki. The lightweight, subtly textured cotton is easy to fold and tie and can be transformed into a generous reusable bag, used to wrap larger gifts or everyday belongings, or worn as a scarf.

Its large format and detailed illustration also make it suitable as a tapestry or decorative textile, or even as a cushion cover. Spread it out to discover and compare the different Japanese folk toys hidden throughout the design.

When not in use, it folds flat and can be reused again and again.
