MUSUBI × COCHAE – Fuku Furoshiki 48 cm – Shishimai & Thief Green

A playful Japanese cotton furoshiki that transforms between a Shishimai lion dancer and a thief, designed by COCHAE for MUSUBI.

The green karakusa arabesque pattern has a clever double meaning. In Japan, this traditional pattern is associated with vitality and longevity, but it is also famously linked in popular imagery with the cloth worn by comical thieves. On another part of the furoshiki, the same design becomes a Shishimai, the traditional Japanese lion dance performed to bring good fortune and ward off illness and misfortune.

Depending on how the cloth is folded and tied, either the lion or the thief appears – a characteristic example of COCHAE's playful approach to Japanese traditions.

How to use

Traditionally used in Japan to wrap and carry objects, a furoshiki can be folded and tied in many different ways. This compact 48 cm size is particularly suited to wrapping a bento box, small gifts, sweets or everyday objects. MUSUBI specifically designed this model so that a face appears neatly when it is wrapped around a lunch box.

The soft gauze-like cotton is easy to tie and absorbent enough for the furoshiki to also be used as a handkerchief. When not in use, it folds flat and can be reused again and again.
