Yakushigama – Lucky cat charm / Maneki neko netsuke (three patterns)

A tiny porcelain  Maneki Neko lucky charm from Yakushigama, available in three traditional cat designs.

Each little cat comes with a  small bell that jingles as it moves and a cord for attaching it to your favourite everyday objects. At only around 2 cm high, it is a charming companion for a pouch, bag or keys – and  perfect for adding to a Traveler’s Notebook as a small decorative charm.

The  Maneki Neko, or “beckoning cat”, is one of Japan’s best-known good-luck symbols, traditionally associated with welcoming good fortune, people and prosperity.

What is a netsuke?

Netsuke have their origins in traditional Japanese dress. As kimono had no pockets, small personal belongings were carried in containers suspended from the  obi sash. A netsuke was the small carved toggle used to secure the cord and prevent it from slipping through the sash.

Originally functional objects, netsuke gradually became highly detailed miniature works of craftsmanship. These little Maneki Neko offer a playful contemporary interpretation of that tradition: small charms designed to be carried and enjoyed every day.
