MUSUBI × COCHAE – Furoshiki 70 cm – Japanese Folktales - The Sea Blue

A colourful Japanese organic cotton furoshiki inspired by traditional Japanese folktales, designed by COCHAE for MUSUBI.

The Sea Blue brings together characters and scenes from Japanese stories and legends connected to the sea. Rather than illustrating a single tale, COCHAE has created a lively composition filled with characters to discover across the cloth, each drawn with the design unit’s distinctive sense of humour and expression. MUSUBI specifically encourages unfolding the furoshiki and exploring the illustration to find the different characters.

At 70 × 70 cm, this furoshiki is considerably larger than the 48 cm COCHAE designs and offers more possibilities for wrapping and carrying. The lightweight organic cotton remains easy to fold and tie.

COCHAE is a Japanese design unit founded in 2003, known for its concept of “playful design”. Their work ranges from graphic origami to toys, packaging and everyday objects, often encouraging people to interact with traditional Japanese culture in unexpected ways.

How to use

Use it as a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth for gift boxes, books and other everyday objects, or knot the corners to create a small reusable bag. MUSUBI also recommends this 70 cm format for wrapping bottles.

The detailed illustration also makes it enjoyable simply to unfold the cloth and look for the different characters hidden throughout the design – particularly fun with children.

When not in use, it folds flat and can be reused again and again.
