The bold red and white composition is designed to interact with the folds of the cloth, revealing different Maneki Neko expressions depending on how the furoshiki is folded and tied.

The Maneki Neko, or “beckoning cat”, is one of Japan’s best-known lucky charms. Traditionally displayed in shops, restaurants and homes, its raised paw is believed to invite good fortune, customers and prosperity.

COCHAE is a Japanese design unit known for its playful approach to traditional culture, particularly origami, folk motifs and everyday objects. Their designs encourage folding and interaction, making them particularly well suited to the traditional art of furoshiki wrapping.

How to use

Traditionally used in Japan to wrap and carry objects, a furoshiki can be folded and tied in many different ways. This compact 48 cm size is particularly suitable for bento boxes, books, small gifts and everyday items.

Experiment with different folds and knots to reveal the Maneki Neko faces incorporated into the design. When not in use, the cloth folds flat and can be reused again and again.
