What is Canopus? Canopus is a paper that we arrived at through trial and error, seeking a paper that is soft to the touch, compatible with a wide range of inks, and has beautiful colors. Yamamoto Shigyo has done its best. It is ideal for shading and sheening of ink and for enjoying color inks.
Passion for new paper In 2019, [Cosmo Airlite] received rave reviews from many writing fans at the San Francisco Pen Show. However, its brilliance came to an end in 2022 with the end of production. We have wandered a long time since that day. Convinced that the paper that Nippon Paper Industries had made as a successor to Cosmo Airlight was not enough to rekindle the excitement of the past, Yamamoto Shigyo continued its research and quest to create a new type of paper. However, the road was not a smooth one. The paper industry in Japan was struggling against the tide of the times, shutting down and scrapping old paper machines and consolidating many types of paper in order to survive. It was extremely difficult to take on the challenge of making new paper in such a severe environment. Even so, we believed it was Yamamoto Shigyo's mission to take the quality of paper produced by Japanese papermaking engineers and the passion they put into each sheet of paper and convey it to the rest of the world.
Canopus 73g/m2 The text is plain so that it can be used freely without restriction. It also comes with a 12mm ruled line/6mm square underlay. The thickness of the text was selected after repeated testing. As a result of consideration from various perspectives, such as being recognized by notebook fans around the world, the transparency of the underlay, and writing comfort, 73.0 g/m2 was adopted. The thickness of 73.og/m2 is 120±3μm, which is roughly equivalent to 150.0g/m2 for coated paper. In other words, Canopus is about 50% lighter than coated paper of similar thickness. Therefore, CANOPUS NOTE can be said to be a very lightweight notebook for the texture* volume of the text.
* Binding: thread stitching Open and close the notebook many times each day, either by opening it 180 degrees flat to the node, or by folding it 360 degrees. The binding of the CANOPUS NOTE is thread-stitched, which means that all pages have a thread-length of approximately 1.5 mm. Every page is threaded in 12 places, about 15 mm apart, so that the pages will not come off even after a long time. Hardcover books and organizers are also bound in this way.
*Binding: Back Straightening After the thread stitching process, pressure is applied evenly to the spine to prevent the paper from rebounding or bulging. This "spine straightening" process is performed several times to ensure that the corners of the CANOPUS NOTE are well-defined and beautifully shaped.
* Binding: Rounded corners In addition, the top edge of the notebook has rounded corners. This prevents the corners of the notebook from being bent. This may be just a small detail, but it will make a big difference in the long term use of the notebook.
Why was this paper named Canopus? Because Canopus is located near the horizon in Japan, it has been said that the star is invisible when the earth burns in times of war or turmoil. In other words, this star is a symbol of peace. We named this beautiful paper "Canopus" in the hope that peaceful times will come from "writing*drawing".
