The clip is made from genuine Japanese shell cordovan (the pen loops) and includes a raw brass Paper Clip, which will oxidise naturally. In fact your clip may already show traces of oxidisation when you receive it. You can either polish it using a brass cleaning product or let it continue to develop its individual patina.

Cordovan is an equine leather made from the fibrous flat muscle beneath the hide on the rump of the horse. The leather derives its name from the city of Cordoba, Spain, where it was first produced by the Visigoths in the seventh century, and later also by the Moors. (Wikipedia).
